Choosing the Right Windows for Your Home

If you’re looking to replace your home’s windows, you want to select styles that are as beautiful as they are functional. With so many options, however, it can be overwhelming. Here’s our guide that compares several different window styles to help you determine which are right for your home.

Schedule window replacement with Absolute Insulation today. Call (409) 724-0300 to get started.

Different Window Styles

ack of a large brick home with different window styles, including double-hung with grids, picture windows and round-top windows.

Each window style has its own advantages in terms of energy efficiency, reliability, cost and functionality. You can select a single style for your entire home or several different styles for variation throughout your home.

Sliding Windows

Sliding windows have one or two moveable sashes that glide horizontally to open. They’re easy to operate, provide unobstructed views, offer good ventilation and are lower maintenance than other windows.

They’re most often found over kitchen sinks, in bathrooms, in basements and in other areas with limited space.

Bay Windows

Bay windows typically consist of a large picture window with smaller casement or double-hung windows on either side. This is a very distinct and attractive architectural addition to any home and can increase your home’s value and brighten your interior with ample natural light.

Bow Windows

With four or more windows in a radial formation, bow windows are very similar to bay windows but have a rounder look. They add beautiful architectural details, increase your home’s market value, offer wide views and bring in an incredible amount of natural light.

Double-Hung Windows

This very common window type has two movable sashes so the window can open from the top or bottom. Double-hung windows offer great ventilation throughout your home, are easy to clean and are versatile.

Picking the Frame & Glass

What your windows are made of will dictate how efficient and effective they are. The frame can be made of several different materials:

  • Vinyl: As a well-constructed, inexpensive material, vinyl is an incredibly popular, practical and energy-efficient choice.
  • Wood: Of all the window frame materials, wood provides the highest level of insulation and can last for decades. They do, however, require a lot of maintenance and upkeep.
  • Aluminum: This material isn’t the best at preventing heat transfer, but they’re great for rainy, humid climates and are strong enough for hurricane-prone areas.
  • Composite: Made from scrap wood shavings and plastic resins, this type of frame looks like wood but is very low maintenance.
  • Fiberglass: This type of composite window is very energy-efficient, strong and durable, but they’re also incredibly expensive.

Absolute Insulation installs Atrium vinyl windows that are WindStorm™-approved. This means they’re incredibly durable, meet TDI’s standards and can withstand Texas’s toughest storms.

As for the glass in your windows, most homeowners choose double-pane windows with low-E glass and a vacuum-sealed argon fill. This makes them very energy-efficient without affecting visibility.

With triple-pane glass, you’re adding cost without much added benefit.
