Best Types of Attic Insulation for Your Home

The attic, or loft, is one of the most significant sources of energy loss in any home, which is why it should be properly insulated.

Absolute Insulation has experience working with all different types of insulation materials, including:
  • Blown-in fiberglass insulation: Fiberglass is made of natural ingredients like sand and recycled glass products spun to create small fiberglass strands. Blown fiberglass insulation is installed with a special blowing device. It’s also a great choice for noise reduction.
  • Batt fiberglass insulation: Batt fiberglass comes in pre-cut panels and is one of the most common forms of insulation available.
  • Spray foam insulation: Spray foam is applied wet and expands into thick foam, making it an ideal insulation material for hard-to-reach areas.
We can recommend the ideal type of insulation for your attic and help you understand how much insulation you need to achieve the ideal R-value, all while completing your insulation project promptly and staying within budget.

What Are the Benefits of Attic Insulation?

Although you may not go up in your attic every day, it doesn’t mean you should overlook the space when it comes to insulating your home.

In fact, if you fail to install attic or loft insulation, your home — particularly the second story — will be much hotter and more uncomfortable in the summer. Attic insulation is worth adding to help:
  • Reduce your utility bills and maximize the energy efficiency of your home.
  • Make your home a more comfortable space with a more consistent temperature throughout.
  • Improve the efficiency of your heater and air conditioner since they likely won’t have to work as hard to regulate your home’s temperature.
  • Reduce noises on different levels inside, which is especially useful if your attic is used as a living space.
  • Contribute to a healthier air quality environment in your home.

If you want to increase your Texas home’s energy efficiency and comfort, attic insulation can help you do that.

FAQs About Attic Insulation

Some of the frequently asked questions we receive about attic insulation in Beaumont and Nederland, TX, include:

Can I save money by removing my attic insulation myself?

If you have infants, seniors or family members with chronic illness, never DIY attic insulation removal. Even if everyone in your household is a healthy adult, hiring a pro to remove attic insulation is the better move.

Removing insulation is difficult and dangerous because:
  • If it’s contaminated with animal waste, asbestos or mold, the uncontained airborne contaminants will negatively impact your indoor air quality and family health.
  • Special tools are needed.
  • There are nine types of insulation. Each type requires experience and material composition safety knowledge.
  • You could damage the area where the insulation is attached, like the drywall and/or support studs.

Can we add new insulation on top of my old attic insulation?

That’s called “retrofitting,” and if your older insulation is undamaged (no mold, moisture or signs of pest infestation), retrofitting your attic insulation is a good idea. Be sure to read Signs You Need More Attic Insulation.

How long will new insulation last?

New insulation (including fiberglass batts) could last between 80 and 100 years. If your attic has older insulation, depending on the materials, it may have begun deteriorating at about 20 years. Be sure to read Signs It’s Time To Re-Insulate Your Attic.

What should I know about R-values and attic insulation?

An R-value is the ability to conduct heat flow. Attic insulation R-values range from 2.0 to 8.0 per inch. Higher is better, and most attics need R-38 or higher.

Our spray foam is the best insulator. It’s also more watertight, which we need here along the Neches River and the Gulf Coast.

What’s the difference between blown-in insulation and spray-foam insulation?

Our blown-in insulation is fiberglass. We apply it in attics because it has good moisture- and mildew-resistant properties. Spray foam insulation is a polyurethane foam we spray on wet. When dry, it fills holes, cracks, and crevices. Spray foam insulation can be used almost anywhere, including retrofitting.

Will attic insulation help with my home’s high humidity?

Yes! Jefferson County’s humidity is higher than most of Texas: 77.24% on average. And about 90% of our homes are under-insulated, even though attic insulation helps with uncomfortable home humidity.

If it’s been feeling muggy in your home, inadequate insulation could be the problem.
